This journal is a collection of tips and tricks to know copying vs stealing vs referencing vs inspiration
and how to report an underage deviant, and how to reverse image search something when it's been stolen and you dont know who made it!

When someone's ocs are stolen, it's 75% likely that it's because SOMEONE shared their art to pinterest/instagram/whatever. Whether to be 'adopted' out to people or just shared all over that horrid website.

Here's an example;

This oc is stolen a lot
And what do you know, it's spread ALL OVER pinterest.
The reason it's stolen a lot is because pinterest is a website meant for sharing and people will take shit off of there because there's no artist' rules or anything besides 'sources' but barely ANYONE checks those.
Here's the original btw- (you'll notice it's only linked once in the above picture, and it is NOT the first link that pops up if you search the image :/ thanks google)

How do you stop people from sharing your pictures/ocs to pinterest/other websites and ultimately opening the doors to art thief hell?

You turn off the fucking BUTTON on your artwork that makes it easy as fuck for them to share it there.
Yes, deviantart, this fucking stupid ass website, has a BUTTON THAT LETS PEOPLE AUTOMATICALLY POST UR SHIT TO THEIR ACCOUNTS.
Journal2 by LambRot
Reddit, pinterest, google+, tumblr, twitter, facebook. People can just share your shit. (and they can delete the link that links back to your deviation)

Now, I know why the feature is there, it shows off your stuff to other people, and it automatically has a source in the description/embed in the post when people post it. But it's NOT being used the way it was intended to be used. People are straight up using these sweet little share buttons to steal ocs and say "who wants to adopt this pony x3" and then 37 people think they own your oc all of the sudden because they have no idea what a source is or why it matters.
This feature is GOOD for bigger artists, and people who DO want their stuff shared. But mlp ocs are particularly stolen for whatever reason.

Now, here's how to turn off the buttons to stop people from sharing your shit to their various accounts;
How To Combat Art Thievery a little by LambRot(please read the description and follow the steps, after you're done, people won't be able to share your work AND they won't be able to see it unless they log in. This makes it harder for thieves to get your work.)

And, after you're done thief-proofing your entire gallery (it took me like half an hour, because you have to do it page by page, but TRUST me it's fucking worth it.)
You can just check off the buttons whenever you submit a new piece-

(you don't have to require login to view, but it's safer)

just remember to do this whenever you post something, if you dont want to keep going to 'manage deviations'

Great, now that you've done all that, you're SAFE from the evil pinterest thieves.

What do you do about the art that's ALREADY been stolen? How do you find it?

Well I have the answer to that too!
www.pinterest.co.uk/source/USE…
you  use this link, replace 'usernamehere' with YOUR username (or your friends, if you want to check) and it will pop up with any art of yours that has been shared to pinterest. I found TONS of shit from my friends there.

(If the above link does not work for you, type out; pinterest. com /source/ username. deviantart. com (no spaces, replace username with your username, obviously.)

sorry this link doesnt work for some reason? try searching up your username on pinterest instead

"But Elias, how do I get it off of pinterest?"

bing bang bong I got an answer for that too

Here's the form you use to report pins using your art. (It even has a feature where you can report more than one pin at once!)

Whenever someone steals an oc, or tries to sell some pony they don't own on dA, it's always some kid from pinterest that came to dA and thinks the rules here are the same as that red hellsite.

That's all for today! I've done all of this and art theft of MY stuff has gone down WILDLY, in fact, my pony art isn't stolen as much as it used to be. (Not counting my bases, but that's because people save them and upload them to google+ or whatever, that's a different issue lmAO)

Have fun and good luck, I hope you too can get YOUR art off of pinterest and out of the hands of 12 yr olds

PLEASE SHARE THIS JOURNAL IF YOU CAN <3

Edit-

If your art was ALREADY reposted to another website, and it's NOT pinterest, here are links to DMCA files you can fill out!
use these links to get your art taken down from whatever website you're being reposted on!
